The following framework assigns points to each “Yes” answer, reflecting the relative risk of various cannabis-related activities. Tally the points at the end to determine the homeowner’s overall risk category.​

Section 1: Personal Use and Possession
Cannabis possession for personal or medicinal use: 1 point
Storing cannabis products at home: 1 point
Compliance with state/local laws
If “No,” add 3 points

​Section 2: Cannabis Cultivation
Growing cannabis plants at home
Personal use: 2 points
Business or sale: 5 points
Use of specialized equipment (e.g., grow lights): 2 points
Cultivation compliance with local laws
If “No,” add 5 points
Secure storage/protection of cannabis plants
If “No,” add 3 points
Use of chemicals (e.g., pesticides, fertilizers): 2 points
Unsafe chemical storage
If “Yes,” add 3 points

Section 3: Liability and Hosting
Allowing guests to consume cannabis at home: 3 points
Monitoring guest consumption levels
If “No,” add 3 points
Providing safe transportation for guests
If “No,” add 3 points
Previous incidents related to cannabis consumption at home: 5 points
Theft or vandalism of cannabis products or plants: 3 points

Section 4: Commercial or Business Use
Growing or processing cannabis for sale/distribution: 5 points
Operating a cannabis-related business from home: 5 points
Licensing for cannabis-related business
If “No,” add 5 points
Storing cannabis business inventory or equipment: 3 points
Inventory value > $10,000: add 3 extra points

Section 5: Property and Safety

  • Cannabis products/plants stored in a secure, fire-safe location

    • If “No,” add 3 points

  • Use of electrical equipment for growing cannabis: 2 points

  • Electrical system not inspected: 5 points

  • Previous property damage (e.g., fire, mold, water) related to cannabis: 5 points

  • Awareness of exclusions in homeowners insurance policy

    • If “No,” add 3 points

  • Discussion of cannabis risks with insurance agent

    • If “No,” add 3 points
